Smoking after bariatric surgery, including sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass, significantly increases the risk of serious complications. This applies to all forms of smoking, including cigarettes, electronic cigarettes (vaping), and shisha (hookah).\n\nEven occasional or light smoking can cause severe gastric ulcers after bariatric surgery. Smoking directly affects blood supply to the stomach and the healing of surgical tissues, increasing the likelihood of postoperative complications.<\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Complications of Smoking After Bariatric Surgery<\/b><\/p>

Smoking after bariatric surgery may lead to several serious complications, including:<\/p>

  • Increased risk of\u00a0gastric leak<\/b><\/li>
  • Higher risk of\u00a0gastrointestinal bleeding<\/b><\/li>
  • Development or worsening of\u00a0gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)<\/b><\/li>
  • Chronic\u00a0Helicobacter pylori infection<\/b><\/li>
  • Difficulty eating or drinking<\/li>
  • Severe\u00a0gastric ulcers<\/b><\/li>
  • Narrowing of the gastric outlet<\/b><\/li>
  • Persistent vomiting<\/li>
  • Dehydration<\/b><\/li>
  • Episodes of\u00a0fainting<\/b><\/li><\/ul>

    Smoking may also lead to\u00a0late complications for months or even years after surgery<\/b>, such as:<\/p>

    • Hiatal hernia<\/b><\/li>
    • Chronic gastric ulcers<\/li>
    • Gastric narrowing or torsion<\/b><\/li><\/ul>

      In some cases, these complications may require\u00a0corrective surgery or conversion to a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass<\/b>.<\/p>

      When Should Patients Stop Smoking Before Bariatric Surgery?<\/b><\/p>

      Bariatric surgeons strongly recommend\u00a0complete cessation of smoking before and after bariatric surgery<\/b>, particularly avoiding cigarettes, shisha, and electronic cigarettes.<\/p>

      At minimum, patients should:<\/p>

      • Stop smoking\u00a0at least two weeks before surgery<\/b><\/li>
      • Avoid smoking for\u00a0at least six weeks after surgery<\/b><\/li><\/ul>

        However, it is important to understand that\u00a0long-term complications related to smoking may still occur even after cessation<\/b>.<\/p>

        Patients Who Should Not Undergo Bariatric Surgery<\/b><\/p>

        Bariatric surgery should\u00a0not be performed<\/b>\u00a0in patients who:<\/p>

        • Smoke cannabis\u00a0<\/b><\/li>
        • Use Opioids<\/b><\/li><\/ul>

          This restriction applies even if the patient is\u00a0not in an addiction stage<\/b>, because these substances are associated with a\u00a0significantly increased risk of postoperative gastric leaks and serious complications<\/b>.<\/p>

          Recommendations from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS)<\/b><\/p>

          The\u00a0American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS)<\/b>\u00a0recommends\u00a0complete smoking cessation before and after bariatric surgery<\/b>\u00a0due to the increased risk of postoperative complications.<\/p>
